Tax Accountant Job Description Overview

Join our dynamic and growing accounting firm in the heart of Utah County! We are seeking highly motivated and detail-oriented Tax Accountants across multiple levels—Tax Preparer, Associate, Senior, and Manager—to join our team. These are full-time, onsite positions based in our Lehi, South Jordan, and Provo offices.

The ideal candidates will possess a strong foundation in U.S. federal and state taxation, excellent analytical skills, and a commitment to providing exceptional client service.Core Responsibilities (All Levels)

  • Prepare and review accurate federal, state, and local tax returns (e.g., 1040, 1120, 1065, 1041, etc.) for individuals, corporations, partnerships, and trusts.
  • Maintain comprehensive, well-organized tax workpapers and documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable tax laws and regulations.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with clients regarding tax matters, collection of information, and filing status.
  • Stay up-to-date on changes in tax legislation and regulatory requirements.

Specific Roles and Requirements

1. Tax Preparer/Associate

This is an entry-level role, focusing on fundamental tax preparation and support tasks under supervision.

  • Experience: 0-2 years of tax preparation experience, or recent college graduate.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
  • Skills: Basic proficiency in tax preparation software (e.g., CCH, ProSystem fx, or equivalent). Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Key Tasks: Data input, preparation of simpler individual (1040) and small business returns, assisting with tax projections, and general administrative support for the tax team.

2. Tax Senior

This is a leadership role responsible for managing complex engagements, reviewing preparer work, and advising clients.

  • Experience: 3+ years of progressive public accounting tax experience.
  • Certification: CPA license or actively pursuing certification is required.
  • Skills: Mastery of tax preparation software and research tools (e.g., RIA, BNA). Excellent technical tax knowledge (e.g., multi-state, complex entity structures). Strong client management and mentorship abilities.
  • Key Tasks: Reviewing complex individual, corporate, and partnership returns. Tax planning and consulting for clients. Training and mentoring Tax Associates/Preparers. Representing clients before taxing authorities (IRS, State) as needed.

3. Tax Manager

This is a high-level position overseeing multiple client engagements, leading a team of tax professionals, and driving business development.

  • Experience: 6+ years of public accounting tax experience, including 2+ years managing staff.
  • Certification: CPA license is required.
  • Skills: Proven ability to lead and develop a tax team. Exceptional technical expertise in complex federal and state tax issues. Strategic planning and business development acumen.
  • Key Tasks: Managing client relationships and engagement profitability. Overseeing the entire tax compliance process. Identifying and implementing tax planning strategies. Contributing to firm growth through internal process improvement and external networking.

Qualifications (All Levels)

  • Location: Must be willing to work onsite in one of our Utah offices (Lehi, South Jordan, or Provo).
  • Technical: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel). Experience with standard tax and accounting software platforms.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective internal and external interaction.
  • Work Ethic: Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
